After two sessions focused on the mechanics and history of elections, this closing conversation turns to action. How do we move from worry and debate to concrete steps that strengthen voting rights and democratic participation?

We’ll be joined by Amy Widestrom, Ph.D, Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania. In her role, Amy leads the League’s nonpartisan work to study public policy issues, develop positions, and take action through education, advocacy, and, when necessary, litigation — always with the goal of empowering voters and defending democracy.

In this 90‑minute session, we will explore:

  • How the League of Women Voters approaches complex political issues through nonpartisan study and consensus‑building.
  • Current issues at the forefront of the League’s work in Pennsylvania, including legislation like the SAVE Act and election‑related questions such as open primaries.
  • The range of tools citizens can use to influence policy: public information campaigns, direct communication with decision‑makers, coalition‑building, and strategic legal action.
  • Practical ways individuals and local groups can plug into ongoing efforts to protect voting rights and improve our election systems.
  • How to talk with neighbors, friends, and colleagues about election integrity in ways that build understanding rather than deepen division.

This session is designed to be hopeful and concrete. It acknowledges the real challenges facing our democracy while focusing on what is possible when informed people act together.

You will leave with:

  • A clearer picture of the landscape of election‑related issues in Pennsylvania right now.
  • Examples of effective, nonpartisan civic action.
  • Ideas for next steps you can take — as an individual, and with others — to help ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted.

Who this is for

  • Anyone who feels concerned about the health of our democracy and wants to do more than worry.
  • Community leaders and organizers looking for nonpartisan ways to engage people around voting and elections.
  • Voters who want to better understand and support the work of groups like the League of Women Voters.
