Interfaith Totem Pole Prayer for the Water

Join 7 Directions of Service and the 17 Rivers AIM Chapter for an Interfaith Prayer as part of the “Free Leonard Peltier Totem Pole Journey”

We will gather by the banks of the Haw River--one of the largest bodies of water threatened by the MVP Southgate Extension--to lay down prayers for the river’s renewal and protection, as we also pray for the wellbeing and release of political prisoner Leonard Peltier.

About the 2023 Free Leonard Peltier Totem Pole Journey:

Since 2002, Jewell James and House of Tears have traveled tens of thousands of miles, holding ceremonies across Turtle Island and gifting dozens of totem poles to communities to build upon, strengthen and reaffirm the growing Indigenous-led justice movements. Like many of the others, this journey will begin at Lummi Nation and travel across the country in ceremony to move the Spirit of healing, honor, protection, education and awareness.

Our goal on this journey is to peacefully inspire communities to join the intergenerational Call to Action for the release of our brother Leonard Peltier. The journey will culminate with 14-stops with a national-call-to-action gathering on his 79th birthday on September 12th in Washington DC.

Hi, my name is [X] and I’m [calling/writing] to ask President Biden to please commute Leonard Peltier’s sentence and grant him clemency immediately so he can live out the rest of his life with his family on his ancestral homelands. Now 78 years old and in deteriorating health, Peltier is the longest-serving political prisoner in the U.S. There is overwhelming proof that he did not commit any offense on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Even a former FBI agent and the federal prosecutor involved in Peltier’s sentencing have publicly stated and written to you that his continued incarceration is unjust and must come to an end.

Leonard Peltier wants to be reunited with his family and to hug his grand-children. Please do the right thing and release him from federal prison immediately.

He is serving two life sentences for aiding and abetting in the deaths of two FBI agents during a shootout on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation in South Dakota in 1975 – a case where his co-defendants, principally charged with the crime, were found not guilty on grounds of self-defense.
