KIFA Advocacy Days
Start: 2021-02-10 06:00:00 UTC Central Standard Time (US & Canada) (GMT-06:00)
End: 2021-02-12 12:00:00 UTC Central Standard Time (US & Canada) (GMT-06:00)
This is a virtual event
A very important part of KIFA’s work is citizen advocacy: bringing engaged Kansans into the statehouse building to speak to their legislators about the issues that concern them. The pandemic has made this very difficult for us; there are restrictions on activities in the statehouse, and in any case we don’t feel comfortable bringing members of the public into an enclosed space where numerous people are likely to be lax about social distancing and masks.
We have therefore moved KIFA Advocacy Days online this year. Rather than having a single lobby day where we bring numerous people physically into the statehouse, we will spread our main activities over a three-day period: Tuesday-Thursday, February 9-11. This will allow people to join us when they can without having to take a full day off from work or school.
Highlights will include: meetings with legislators in the mornings; a “plenary session” with a prominent public official at noontime; and workshops in the afternoon, on the issues we’re involved with and on the nuts and bolts of citizen advocacy, particularly when it has to be done virtually.
Tentative schedule:
Monday evening: Opening session and Advocacy 101
Tues-Wed-Thurs: Meetings with legislators, plenary session (noon), workshops (3-5)
Friday morning: Regional KIFA meetings, interfaith vigils at 5 Kansas lynching sites.
A full schedule and Zoom links for the events will be distributed the week before the event.
Please plan to join us and bring your friends and fellow congregation members!
