Lawrence Deserves a Voice on Surveillance

Start: Tuesday, August 05, 202505:45 PM

The city is betting we won't show up.

Last year, the City of Lawrence quietly approved a $3.2 million bundled contract with Axon Enterprises, including Fusus, a live camera surveillance system that enables livestreaming and police access to privately owned security cameras.

Over 100 cameras were already connected before the public even knew. There was no commission discussion, no media coverage, and no public input.

Despite hundreds of petition signatures and formal requests from residents, the Lawrence City Commission refused to place Fusus on the agenda. That means there's been no public hearing, no debate, and no consent.

This Tuesday, we show up to demand better.
---------

? During General Public Comment, we’ll speak out about the lack of transparency and demand that surveillance policy be debated in the open.

? At 5:30 PM, we’ll gather outside. We’ll have comment scripts and talking points available for those who want to speak, or just come to be counted and bear witness.

? Bring a sign. Bring a friend. Bring your voice.

This is our chance to go on record to make clear:
Public safety should never come at the expense of public consent.
