Join the Center for Responsible Forestry and the Legacy Forest Defense Coalition as we hike to a beautiful legacy forest threatened by logging. The Tuckered Out timber sale in the Marckworth State Forest was one of the 23 sales temporarily protected by Dave Upthegrove’s “Time Out For Trees.” With the end of this six month moratorium and the release of a preliminary and deeply flawed conservation map which currently excludes all timber sales planned for the next five years, this forest may once again be on the chopping block if we don’t advocate for its survival. Tuckered Out is one of our highest priority timber sales statewide, and we want to share with you our strategy for how to protect it and ways you can help us make this happen!

Tuckered Out is a great example of the kind of naturally regenerated, structurally complex second growth forest that has become vanishingly rare in the lowlands of King and Snohomish counties. Red cedars and Douglas firs tower over a rich understory of ferns, shrubs, and mosses. The forest floor is soft, deep, and alive under your feet as birds and squirrels call from the canopy. This rich place is a home to many amidst a sea of clearcut lands and young plantation monocultures.

This will be a 4.5 mile round trip hike with 700 feet of elevation gain. It will involve walking on forest roads, some sections of which are very exposed to the elements. We will also be travelling moderately overgrown singletrack trails through the woods, and doing a brief stretch of bushwhacking upon reaching the legacy forest. Please make sure you are physically prepared, have good shoes, and bring the 10 essentials. This route is dry aside from one small stream, so please plan to bring at least a liter and a half of water. We will be out for most of the day, so please also plan to bring what food you need, including lunch.

Parking is tight at our trailhead, so we will be carpooling from the Duvall park and ride. If you have a vehicle in good condition, a discover pass, 3-4 open seats, and are comfortable being a carpool driver over good gravel forest roads, please check the box on the signup for and/or reach out to tom@c4rf.org. We will be meeting in Duvall at 9:30 am on Saturday September 20th, and returning to the park and ride before 5 pm. There’s limited space on this walk, so sign up soon; looking forward to seeing you there!
