March 2022 General Meeting (featuring Speakers and Discussion on the Invasion of Ukraine)

Start: Wednesday, March 02, 202207:00 PM

End: Wednesday, March 02, 202208:30 PM

The Anti-War Working Group will hold its next general meeting on Wednesday, March 2nd at 7PM. This will be both IN PERSON at the People's Forum in Manhattan AND on Zoom. If you're coming in person, join us at 6:45PM for some snacks and hellos!

Our meeting will feature a discussion of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We will be joined by two speakers who will provide short presentations on the war. The first is David Klion, a contributor to various left wing publications including Jewish Currents and The Nation. Klion has written extensively on foreign policy and Russia over the years, and has published recent essays on the deep history of the current war (one of which is linked below). Our second speaker is Gerard of the DSA International Committee. Gerard has helped draft statements on the conflict on behalf of DSA, and has recently appeared on the organization’s WBAI Radio Program “Revolutions Per Minute.”

Discussion questions and readings below (watch out for an official DSA statement between now and the general meeting as well):

Russia's Invasion of Ukraine: An Explainer

DSA National Political Committee Statement: On Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

1. Does the United States have any responsibility for the initiation of the war in Ukraine? If so, how much responsibility compared to Russia and other local actors?

2. Can the United States do anything to end the war in Ukraine or alleviate the suffering caused by the war? What are the material risks of and moral dilemmas raised by action or inaction?

3. How will war in Ukraine affect DSA’s organizing in the United States? What, if anything, should DSA do in response to this crisis?
