March and Rally to Demand Justice 4 Jonathan Cortez!
Start: Saturday, October 16, 2021•02:30 PM
Join us in downtown Oakland for a rally and march to demand #Justice4JonathanCortez!!!
We’re calling on everybody to support Jonathan’s family in this moment. Jonathan took a trip to the corner store a month ago and never came home because he was gunned down by the FBI.
Then armed law enforcement agents terrorized Jonathan’s funeral and reception, drawing their guns with children present and arresting loved ones in attendance, retraumatizing Jonathan’s family and friends in their time of mourning — not even allowing them to grieve.
The family believes they were racially profiled, criminalized and stereotyped as a gang for wearing red — Jonathan’s favorite color. To make matters worse, the family was led to believe that the agent who killed Jonathan was among those harassing family and friends.
And since they decided to speak out, unknown law enforcement agents have continued to call, harass, and follow members of the family. This is terrorism.
On Saturday let’s show the feds that the community is united in support of the family. We condemn Jonathan's murder, call out the horrific acts of law enforcement on the day of the funeral, and demand justice and accountability.
Jonthan was a father of three who turned 31 years old in August. He was full of life, always smiling, and went out of his way to help people. He often helped strangers to get off of drugs and into programs. Jonathan also loved to make food and aspired to be a chef like his father. He should be alive with this family today.
The family demands:
The FBI must release all video recordings of Jonathan’s killing;
Mayor Schaaf must name the officers or agents who were involved in Jonathan’s murder;
Jonathan’s personal belongings must be returned to his family;
All federal, state and local law enforcement must immediately stop harassing and following Jonathan’s family;
Stop the ongoing character assassination of Jonathan.
In addition, the family and community are outraged that the City of Oakland has done nothing to protect us from outside law enforcement agencies like the FBI and the California Highway Patrol, which killed Erik Salgado last year. We demand answers and accountability.
