New York Power Authority - we want renewables on brownfields!

The New York Power Authority has announced hearing dates to receive feedback from the public on it's strategic plan for developing renewable energy projects.

Unfortunately, the current plan only includes five projects in NYISO Power Load Zone A (Niagara, Erie, Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, Livingston Wyoming, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Chautauqua counties) despite our region's crucial and traditional role as the power supplier for NY.

WNY supports renewable power generation - but we want to see it done smartly, with community solar projects in our neighborhoods to strengthen local grids and resiliency, and with reuse of industrial brownfields for industrial-scale power.

These brownfields were often contaminated by fossil fuel-based power generation like the former Huntley plant, and have the infrastructure and connections already in place to plug renewable power generated right into the grid. Clean Air is advocating for the reuse of Tonawanda Coke (3875 River Road) as a solar power farm.

Instead, we are seeing these sites sit vacant, or used for unwanted and harmful industries, and are also seeing industrial renewable power generation proposed and developed on the few remaining open "greenfield" spaces in our region.

Join us to tell NYPA that we want to see renewable energy development - and that we want to see these projects proposed on industrial brownfields!

Clean Air will coordinate carpools among registered community members - please indicate on your form if you would like to get a ride or can offer a ride.
