In case you didn’t hear, earlier this month, top lawmakers in Annapolis introduced legislation that would build one or more large gas-burning power plants in the state! We couldn’t believe it. On a rapidly warming planet, with sea-level rise and extreme weather battering the state, lawmakers want to bring MORE gas to the state?!

It’s a misguided and EXPENSIVE plan to address the very real problems of grid congestion and rising power bills in Maryland. But there are ample alternatives to burning fracked gas — including more solar investments, battery storage deployment, and smart grid technology — that would be faster, cheaper and cleaner to deploy.

* Following the rally, the Senate Education, Energy, and the Environment Committee is holding a hearing on leadership's package of energy bills that includes providing incentives for building new gas plants.
