Capitol Day: February 2, (Groundhog Day!), 9:30 am to 3 pm, PA Capitol, Harrisburg
The PA Constitution, first ratified in 1776, 250 years ago, promises that power is inherent to the people, and we the people have the right to alter and reform our government. Our state legislature ignores good government bills year after year, decade after decade. It is time to exercise our rights and demand democracy.
Democracy Workshops: Organizations and individuals working to create a government that is responsive and accountable to Pennsylvanians will meet in Harrisburg on February 1 for an afternoon and evening of networking and training about how our state government works, needed pro-democracy reforms, and ways to advocate together to build the democracy we deserve.
Capitol Day: Together, on February 2nd, we will stand in the capitol rotunda and say: "This year is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and of the PA Constitution, and we are here to make a Declaration of Democracy! Our constitution promises that power belongs in the votes and the voices of the people. We are tired of big money in politics, gerrymandering, and every legalized corruption and hyper-partisan scheme that hurts Pennsylvanians and causes real suffering. Join us as we demand government of, by and for the people of Pennsylvania."
Since it's Groundhog Day, we'll be highlighting reforms that have been introduced in repeated sessions and may have some fun Groundhog Day tie-in activities.
February 1: Workshops on Sunday, February 1st will include: Power Mapping, Legislative Dysfunction, Redistricting, Money in Politics, Base-building / Organizing, and Talking with Legislators.
February 2: Press conference at 11 AM in the rotunda, meetings with legislators, info tables in the main rotunda and other possible activities to raise awareness of pro-democracy reforms and PA legislative dysfunction.
