People's State of the Union: A Philadelphia Story Circle for Women and Girls*

Start: Saturday, February 04, 2017 4:00 PM

End: Saturday, February 04, 2017 7:00 PM

*We use an inclusive definition of “woman” and “girl" and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who identify (currently or historically) as women in some way.

Most years, the President delivers a State of the Union Address highlighting the past year and priorities for the coming year. In inauguration years there is no official speech, instead a Transition Team of experts is assembled to advise on directions and strategies. But a handful of experts can’t represent all of us. After this campaign cycle, We the People are likely to have a lot to say about the state of our union, and our sense of belonging in this country. That is why, this month, all over the country organizations and individuals are hosting story circles. The stories will be collected and shared in a Poetic Address to the Nation on March 11th.

Collaborators and partners including ArtWell and The Children's Community School, neighbors, artists and organizers, invite you to participate in a re-imagined annual civic ritual to make your voices heard.  Join us to share, listen, support and connect with one another, resources and actions for collective impact in a space that welcomes all stories and experiences of intersectional womanhood. Activities will include poetic and musical performances, story circles, resource and action tables, interactive art making, and snacks and refreshments.

Childcare will be available and there will be a children’s story circle for children 4 years and older.

*This event is centering the experiences of women and girls*.  People of other gender identities may attend as listeners, volunteers, or show solidarity by signing up for a post-event listening party and help transcribe our stories. Email Julia@theartwell.org for more information about getting involved.

*The Children's Community School is wheelchair accessible*
