Join Pine Belt Humanists as we participate in the Great Southeastern Pollinator Census, a community science project that helps researchers learn more about the pollinators that play an essential role in our ecosystems.

We'll meet on the University of Southern Mississippi campus at the "Lofty Return" golden eagle statue before heading out to observe and count pollinators. No special experience or scientific background is required. Just bring a writing utensil, your curiosity, and a willingness to spend some time outdoors!

What to bring:

  • A count sheet, if you have one (we'll also have some available)
  • A pen or pencil (we'll have some pens, but bringing your own is encouraged)
  • Water and sunscreen
  • Comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for spending time outdoors
We will pick a plant (a 2x2 patch is perfect)-- we can pick the same plant or all pick different plants. We will identify the plant and then identify and count the insects that land on the flowers of that plant for 15 minutes. We can repeat this 15 minute process as many times as we want!
Once you've completed your count(s), you can submit your results yourself through the Great Southeastern Pollinator Count website. If you'd prefer, you can turn your completed form in to Mandy, and she'll make sure it gets submitted for you.

This is a great opportunity to connect with fellow humanists, enjoy some time in nature, and contribute to a larger scientific effort right here in our community. Whether you're a longtime humanist, a nature enthusiast, a budding citizen scientist, or simply curious about what we'll find, we'd love to have you join us!

We hope to see you there!

Can't make it to the group count? No worries. You can count pollinators wherever you are in Mississippi! You can count with a buddy or count solo; it's the counting that...counts!
