With Global FIGHT FOSSIL FUELS DAY OF ACTION
Gas is a fossil fuel we need to transition away from, yet seismic blasting exploration for gas is proposed over 55,000 sq km of the Otway Basin. Seismic blasting is deadly for marine life and can impact all levels of the food chain from its very foundations, killing zooplankton more than a kilometre away, to deafening whales.
The timing of this is important as NOPSEMA is currently reviewing the proposal by companies to start seismic exploration and reviewing public submissions. This will bring the song of the whales into the city and is supported by coastal communities already engaged in protecting the waters of Victoria.
Meet at Enterprize Park on the Birrarung (Yarra), corner of Flinders and Queensbridge Sts next to the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium at 4:30 pm. From the park we will march to the NOPSEMA office at 140 William St and then to the State Library. Speakers will include Lisa Doppeler from OCEAN and XR Westside’s Tony Gleeson.
Listen to the poignant Whale Song Interrupted Soundtrack!
Banners, placards, flags and flyers will be provided. Wear blue or ocean-themed attire—or come as you are.
