Rally to Stop The Turnpike Expansion Project at Feb. 27 Open House

Start: Tuesday, February 27, 2024 6:00 PM

Join EmpowerNJ at the first open house on the NJ Turnpike Expansion project where we'll rally with local allies to demand that Governor Murphy cancel this dirty, expensive and unnecessary highway widening project!  This ill-conceived and ludicrously expensive highway widening project through Bayonne and Jersey City, which despite its cost of more than a billion dollars a mile, will not even reduce traffic congestion, but instead increase traffic, greenhouse gasses and toxic pollution.  The project is estimated at more than $10.7 billion, to widen the Turnpike Extension across the Hackensack River and through Bayonne and Jersey City.  EmpowerNJ is working with a broad coalition of environmental justice communities, safe streets activists and transportation policy advocates to stop this project and to call on Governor Murphy to repurpose the money for public transit.

The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Newark’s East Side High School at 238 Van Buren Street, running from 6 to 9 p.m.  NJ Turnpike Authority officials will attend and be available to answer questions. Join us outside the event at 6pm as we rally to show the Turnpike Authority and Governor Murphy the deep level of opposition from across the state for an unneeded and massively expensive highway widening project.

Please register here to join us for this critical and timely action!
