San Francisco has always had an affordable housing shortage, but solutions outside of the private sector have long been neglected or overlooked. Join us as we learn about the history of one proposed solution: public housing.

Covering the past century of housing policy, "Housing the City by the Bay" explores the history and many incarnations of San Francisco's public housing programs. Meant to alleviate the boom and bust of the Bay Area's real estate market, public housing has had a complicated relationship to working class struggles for community control and preservation of housing. Starting with the creation of the San Francisco Housing Authority in 1938 and ending with our current era of privatization, "this history of public housing sheds light on changing attitudes towards liberalism, the welfare state, and the economic and civil rights attached to citizenship."

Join us for the 1st of a 4 part session. We will meet every two weeks on Thursday, starting September 18th, 7:30pm at the the DSASF office on 1916 McAllister Street. Zoom available after RSVP
