Tenant Class is a manifesto that challenges conventional thinking about the so-called housing crisis. Tranjan argues that if unaffordable housing has become the normal state of affairs, one that consistently enriches landlords and real estate investors, then this is not a crisis for everyone, but rather the predictable outcome of a housing system organized for private profit. He critiques technocratic solutions, such as simply building more market-rate housing, as incapable of addressing affordability within a profit-driven system. Instead, Tranjan draws a crucial distinction between affordable housing, which remains tied to market forces, and social housing, which removes homes from speculation and treats housing as a public good rather than a commodity. Throughout, the book calls for a fundamental rethinking of housing policy by framing tenants as a collective political class capable of transforming the housing system.
