From the next revolutionary AI tool to the biggest companies around the world, more and more of our economy relies on remote workers. Platforms like Amazon MTurk, Upwork or Clickworker connect clients with large pools of workers around the world. But without clear regulation, the conditions of these jobs can be very precarious.

The Fairwork Cloudwork report 2023 evaluates the working conditions of 15 web-based platforms providing services related to microwork and online freelancing. It finds that online work platforms are still far from safeguarding basic standards of decent work.

The third yearly report takes a closer look at the precarious conditions of workers that provide services to AI companies. While the AI hype keeps growing, workers behind the design, building and testing of these technological solutions unfortunately are still very far from experiencing fair working conditions.

Fairwork’s principles — fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation — are a guide for how platforms can do better. In fact, some platforms have agreed to make substantial changes, showing that a fairer future is possible.

During the event, Fairwork Director, Prof Mark Graham, and the report's lead researcher, Dr Jonas Valente, will present the main findings. This will be followed by an expert panel discussion about the present and future of Cloudwork. There will also be a Q&A with the audience.
