Rise For Climate - Peterborough

Start: Saturday, September 08, 201801:00 PM

Host contact info riseforclimateptbo@gmail.com

This event is hosted by the Peterborough Alliance for Climate Action, a group of citizen activists who advocate for immediate action to address the causes and effects of climate change, and opposes the purchase and construction of the ill-conceived Kinder Morgan pipeline, a project that has not received the consent of First Nations peoples and which poses a serious threat to our environment.

We will meet at Confederation Square, across from City Hall, at 1pm, September 8, where Dorothy Taylor, a Curve lake elder, will initiate the event with a welcoming ceremony. We will then march down local streets and return to Confederation Park where other activities are planned. Along the way and in the park we will use music, poetry and street theatre to highlight the need to immediately implement policies to curb climate change. We will also speak out against the federal government's irrational decision to buy the Kinder Morgan pipeline, a regressive investment that commits us to another generation or two of fossil-fuel dependency when much of the rest of the world is turning to renewables. All are welcome!

On Friday evening, September 7, we will host a viewing of the film Directly Affected and a discussion of Canada's failure to address the climate change crisis. Directly Affected shows how building the Kinder Morgan pipeline will lead to disastrous consequences for people, animals and the environment. Dennis Howlett, former Executive Director of Canadians for Tax Fairness, will speak on the topic of Climate, Jobs and Justice. Details to be announced.
