Rivercide by Franny Armstrong

Start: Friday, October 29, 202107:00 PM

Franny is a celebrated documentary filmmaker and a hugely engaging public speaker. Her previous films, ‘McLibel’ (about the McDonald’s court case), ‘Drowned Out’ (about the campaign to stop the Narmada Dam project) and ‘Age of Stupid’ (the acclaimed film that warns of the catastrophic effects of climate change, starring Pete Postlethwaite) have established Franny as one of the UK’s very best film producers.

Franny will show excerpts from her most recent documentary ‘Rivercide’, a film written and presented by George Monbiot, the highly respected environmentalist, author and investigative journalist.

‘Rivercide’ shows how the agencies charged with protecting our rivers have been progressively under-funded and under-resourced and are failing to adequately monitor water quality and enforce action against polluters.

“Our rivers should be beautiful, complex ecosystems. But on our watch, they've become open sewers, poisoned by sewage and farm slurry. They’re dying before our eyes.” (Monbiot).

The presentation will be chaired by Richard McLaughlin. Richard is a retired chartered civil engineer. He lives near Brendon and is a former chair of the River Lyn Riparian Owners. He was also a founder member of the Exmoor Rivers & Streams Group. He received the annual conservation award of the South West Rivers Association in 2012.
