Our Political Education Committee hosts regular sessions to raise political consciousness and discuss the ideas that inform our movement. It’s a great place to meet your comrades and develop politically, whether you’re new to these ideas or not. Every effort is made to create a safe, accessible, and comradely space for discussion. Sessions are hybrid; online over Zoom and in-person at Marie Daley Park [160 Gregory St.].
ROC DSA Socialist Sunday School 81: No Shortcuts in the Labor Movement. In conjunction with our Labor Working Group, we’ll read from Jane McAlevey’s No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the Gilded Age. In this 2016 volume, using recent case studies, McAlevey argues that meaningful social change requires a shift from shallow “mobilizing” to deep “organizing,” which centers on building high-participation unions and empowering ordinary people to exercise collective power. She explains “whole-worker” organizing and rigorous “structure tests” as elements of bottom-up movements that win transformational victories.
We will share a link to the reading soon. Here is a link to the Introduction: https://www.dsausa.org/files/2019/05/McAlevey-NoShortcuts_Introduction-PRO-version.pdf.
