UNE is in crisis.
We need a public university to provide high level education and good jobs in our region. Instead, we have seen conduct from our leaders that has brought our university into disrepute and a crisis of staff wellbeing emerge, which has been acknowledged by the state regulator.
In response to pressure from staff, the NTEU and the UNE Professoriate the interim Vice Chancellor, Prof Simon Evans, has convened convocation. Most staff, most former staff, UNE alumni and current and former UNE councillors are members of Convocation. The NTEU hopes to expand this to all staff and students eventually.
On Thursday 1st December, join the National Tertiary Education Union, alumni, and past staff to dicsuss our proposals for Convocation.
These include measures to:
1. Ensure convocation becomes a regular part of university governance at UNE and beginning the process of expaning ellibigility of membership of convocation to students and all staff, especially insecurely employed staff.
2. Move towards democratic, collegial governance at UNE.
3. The chancellor and the current senior executive must take responsibility for the crisis UNE faces, and the chancellor must resign.
4. Increasing the staff and community voice on UNE council.
Please join us in discussing these proposals, and how you can be part of our push to ensure that UNE becomes the public university we all need.
