Say No to New Pollution in the Port!
Start: Thursday, June 10, 2021•06:00 PM

Join the People’s Port Authority, the Interfaith Coalition to Reduce Poverty, and the Renew Rhode Island coalition for a vigil to oppose Sea 3’s dangerous proposal to build new polluting facilities in the Port! We’ll gather with faith leaders and members of the community to make it clear that we won’t stand for more environmental racism in the Port.
HOW TO TAKE ACTION BEFORE THE VIGIL:
Check out bit.ly/sea-3-toolkit for quick ways to take action and spread the word!
BACKGROUND CONTEXT:
Sea 3, a local subsidiary of a Texas-based oil company and a multi-billion dollar investment firm, is trying to massively expand fossil fuel infrastructure in the Port. Their plan is to bring over half a million more gallons of liquid propane gas into the Port and create new tanks to store this toxic, explosive material. In the process, they will pollute the air with even more diesel emissions, worsening air quality in a mostly low-income and Black and brown community with some of the highest asthma rates in the country.
Like typically happens, this giant corporation is trying to cut the deal behind closed doors by skipping over the regular permitting process to silence community concerns. Sea 3 is claiming that adding tanks to store half a million gallons of liquid propane gas does not count as an “alteration to a major energy facility,” so this enormous expansion should not be overseen by the Energy Facilities Siting Board, which is responsible for giving the project the permits it needs to move forward. This is clearly untrue. Not only is this project a huge expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure in clear opposition to our climate goals, it also puts our neighbors’ health and safety at risk, especially considering this dangerous gas would be stored right along the water, ready for disaster to strike with the next major storm.
We can’t let this project move forward! Join us and speak out!
