350NJ Call to Action:Senators Menendez and Booker: Derail Trump’s Climate Deniers!!Monday, January 9, 2017 in Newark Over the past weeks, President-Elect Trump has announced a virtual “rogue’s gallery” to head federal departments and agencies critical to taking effective action to fight climate change. At a time when our nation should be making serious progress on the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, we are likely to be faced with back-pedaling, wrong priorities, and catastrophic policies. On January 9, 350.org will lead a nationwide Day Against Denial during which we will stand against Trump’s climate science denier nominees. We will call on New Jersey’s two US Senators to derail these dangerous appointments in upcoming confirmation hearings. While focusing on climate, we’ll also challenge rhetoric aimed at turning back the clock on economic justice, women’s rights, immigrant rights, and gender rights. Our local action will take place in Newark, where each of our state’s US Senators have offices. We will gather in a nearby local park, where we’ll hear speeches and energize ourselves. Then we’ll walk down a short path to the building housing our Senators’ offices. There we’ll hear some more speeches, display our signs, raise our voices, and empower delegations to meet with the Senators’ staff members. Our message to the Senators: “Derail Trump’s Climate Deniers!!” >> Initial Gathering: 12 p.m. at the south end (‘Apex’) of Military Park (51 Park Pl, Newark, NJ 07102) >> Final Gathering: 1 p.m. at One Gateway Center (2-26 Raymond Plaza West, Newark, NJ 07102; Market Street Sidewalk) The events will occur rain or shine, hot or cold. Ample parking is available in garages and surface lots (bring a credit card to pay and exit) as well as on the street (free spaces may be available farther from the venues). We’ll keep you updated with emails closer to the event date as well as on 350NJ’s Facebook page. Forward this “Call to Action” to friends and family. Make plans to take a bus or train or to carpool in together!! Join us!! We’re going to send a clear, bold message!! “Derail Trump’s Climate Deniers!! Derail Trump's Climate Deniers!!” See you there! The 350NJ Team – Jerome, Lou, Norm, Anu, Rich, and Rosemary ___________ Supporters include: New Jersey Sierra Club, Food & Water Watch, Greenpeace, CREDO, Interfaith Power and Light, Beyond Extreme Energy, The Green Party of Essex County, Franciscan Response to Fracking, Environment NJ, New Jersey State Industrial Union Council, North Jersey People for Progress, Climate Mama, Hackensack Riverkeeper, EJ Green Drinks, The Wei, Tierra Madres, Waterkeeper Alliance, and others. ___________ The Nominees That We Are Targeting and Why They Are Dangerous to Our Planet Rex Tillerson (nominated for Secretary of State): The CEO of ExxonMobil who has expanded its extraction of fossil fuels worldwide. ExxonMobil has spent millions of dollars casting doubt on climate change. Scott Pruitt (nominated to head the US Environmental Protection Agency): The Attorney General of oil and gas-intensive Oklahoma who has sued the EPA over its efforts to curtail greenhouse gas emissions. He has said that the debate on climate change is “far from over.” Ryan Zinke (nominated for Secretary of the Interior): Montana’s US Representative who has supported the expansion of pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure. Rick Perry (nominated for Secretary of Energy): former Governor of Texas and an enthusiastic supporter of Texas’s fossil fuel extraction industry. He once called for the elimination of the Department of Energy. If confirmed by the US Senate, these four nominees would have the power to dramatically expand oil and gas drilling and coal mining in the United States; obstruct the shift to wind and solar power; expand the export of US fossil fuels world-wide; and spur a rise in power plant and transportation greenhouse gas emissions. We don’t have time to waste. These actions would be disastrous for Americans and for the planet. |
