Once the election is (hopefully) determined, it is time for a discussion of "the party question" and how to move forward.
What is a political party? What is the role of a political party in socialist thought? Is the Democratic Party capable of being reformed into a social democratic party (i.e. "realignment"), or should socialists be openly aiming to split progressives from the Democrats into a new party (i.e. a "dirty break")? Or are the Democrats so tainted we should stop running on the Democratic line and just focus on third parties (i.e. a "clean break")?
- 2019 DSA Convention Resolutions 13 and 15
- Jared Abbott “The Two Paths of Democratic Socialism: Coalition and Confrontation”
- Joe Evica and Andrew Sernatinger “Taking the dirty break seriously”
- Emerge “On The Party Question”
(Don't worry, the readings are not obligatory. If you don't have time to read them, you'll still get something out of the presentation and the discussion.)
The presentation and discussion will be online and will be recorded. You will receive a reminder email with a conference link the day of the meeting.
