As socialist, we know there are basic needs that are the right of every human being. Among them are food, housing, health care, education, and child care. A basic need of capitalism is for workers to show up every day ready to work, physically, psychologically, and with the proper training, and they need children to be ready to take their turn to do the same when the time comes. That is, it needs laborers, and labor power. This production of laborers and labor power requires all the things socialists consider human rights, but the ruling class doesn't see it as its responsibility to guarantee those things. Workers and their families feed, house, medicate, and educate themselves and their children, regenerate themselves physically and psychologically, and get themselves to work day after day, generation after generation at little cost to the ruling class. This is the capitalist mode of social reproduction. Historically, social reproduction has been done primarily as unpaid or poorly paid labor, and mostly by women. If you want to know more, come attend this session of Socialist Night School.   The reading for this session can be found here. As always, you don't need to do the reading to attend, but you'll get more out of it if you do.
