The concepts of a political “Right” and “Left” date back to the French Revolution, where the seating arrangements in the National Assembly corresponded to ideological affiliations. In the right wing of the chamber sat supporters of the ancien regime of monarchy and feudalism, and the left wing represented those in favor of a republic and capitalism. Although the political moment of 1789 has long passed, the terminology about alignment, broadly about reactionaries to radicals, continues to be a mainstay in political discourse. What it means to be Right Wing or Left Wing is redefined in the environment of each era, but the common thread of conflicting over tradition, egalitarianism, and liberties persist throughout generations.
