Speak up for a Safer Ocean Ave and Faster & Reliable K Trains! Townhall Meeting 2 of 2

Start: Monday, May 04, 202606:00 PM

Location: SF City College Harry Britt Building Room 140 55 Frida Kahlo Way, SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94112 US

Come out and support a safer Ocean Ave and faster & Reliable K trains at this first of two Community Town Halls hosted by SFMTA, Supervisor Melgar, Supervisor Chen, and Ocean Avenue Association (OAA)

In January, 2026 SFMTA paused the painting of the red transit-only lanes due to opposition from businesses owners and community members who were concerned on the impact of reduced lanes on their businesses and increased congestion. This project was part of the Ocean Avenue Mobility Action Plan and K-Ingleside Rapid Project approved back in March, 2024.

In response, SFMTA, Supervisors Melgar and Chen, and OAA are organizing two town halls professionally facilitated in order to provide community members to be heard and discuss solutions addressing concerns.

Come out, voice, and show you support for putting red-lanes on Ocean Avenue to make K-Ingleside faster, reliable, and as a pedestrian safety measure!

Transit-only lanes have been shown to increase transit ridership, decrease congestion, improve the local economy, and reduce traffic collisions: a win-win for riders, drivers, and pedestrians!

  • Red transit-only lanes have been shown to make streets safer for pedestrians. In some areas of SF, red lanes reduced injury collisions by 24%.
  • The K Ingleside train has average speeds as low as 5 MPH on some parts of the corridor.
  • SFMTA is soliciting feedback to potentially change the plans.

Why it matters:
  • SFMTA needs to hear from community members why we need these transit only lanes to make Ocean Ave safer and to make transit run more efficiently.
  • Safer streets and faster transit benefits everyone from pedestrians, local businesses, drivers, and the environment.

UPDATE:

On the first townhall held on April 11, 2026, supporters for the red transit lanes voiced why transit-only lanes are needed on Ocean avenue. To note, everyone in the meeting was in agreement that more needs to be done to improve pedestrian safety, ideas such as 20mph speed and no left turn cameras, installation of physical or other calming measures such as railings and rubber curbs, and colorful and/or more visible crosswalks. We think we can have those AND red lanes - because everyone was also in agreement - we need better transit.

For the next meeting scheduled for May 4, 2026, the focus will be on solutions. We've been consistent in our support for the red-lanes - for better transit and safer streets. Solutions to the concerns on traffic diverting into other neighborhoods and impacts to businesses can be found but not at the expense of transit-only lanes and pedestrian safety.

We will be sending out an updated info sheet with suggested talking points closer to the event.

Thank you.
