Starbucks has been greenwashing its plastic beverage cups, advertising them as "widely recyclable" despite no evidence they are being recycled. Beyond Plastics tracked 36 Starbucks cups using bluetooth air tags and found they are going to landfills and incinerators - none ended up at a recycling facility.
Starbucks uses 8 million plastic cups every day, creating an enormous amount of plastic waste nationwide.
Immediately stop deceiving the public about plastics recycling at Starbucks stores by removing the recycling images of plastic cups from its in-store bins.
Give employees the staffing and resources they need to follow Starbucks own “A Better Cup for All” policy, which says ALL customers who order inside company-owned stores are served in a reusable ceramic cup or glass. Starbucks says this is its policy, but the reusable containers are often not offered.
Implement a nationwide switch from plastic to paper-based to-go cups and lids, just like Starbucks has already done in more than 550 stores across 14 states.
Please note that this event will be both peaceful and respectful. We are trying to get the attention of Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol - this is not directed at the Starbucks workers. We are urging Starbucks to better support its workers so they can actually serve customers in reusable glasses, per Starbucks policy.
