Staten Island Tax Day March: "Don't Take Away Our Health Care to Give Billionaires Tax Cuts!"

Start: Tuesday, April 15, 2025 4:30 PM

End: Tuesday, April 15, 2025 6:00 PM

NY-11 for Health Care

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) and her congressional colleagues are moving ahead with radical plans to take away health care from tens of millions of people across the US --including tens of thousands of Staten Islanders-- in order to pay for EVEN MORE HUGE tax cuts for billionaires, special interests, and big corporations. On Thurs. April 10th, she provided the deciding vote in the House to move this plan forward.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump's main henchman Elon Musk --the world's richest person-- and his shady (if not illegal) "DOGE" operation have arbitrarily closed down IRS offices across the country at the very height of the tax season. People have been left stranded, and are now either forced to travel long distances for in-person help, or endure long waiting times on telephone helplines.

Join fellow Staten Islanders to "hit the streets" to:

  • Call -out the very real threats by Congress to Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act, as well as funding for our hospitals, community health centers, nursing homes, and home care programs.
  • Call for Rep. Malliotakis to publicly speak out against these proposed draconian health care cuts to pay for tax cuts, and to protect these vital federal health care programs.
  • Urge Rep. Malliotakis to instead require big corporations and the ultra-wealthy to "pay what they owe" and "pay their fair share" of taxes, so that health and human service programs can be adequately funded, improved, and expanded to help many more people live full and productive lives.
  • Call on Rep. Malliotakis to hold an in-person public town hall to explain her positions, and hear from her constituents.

We'll be starting off with a press conference on the steps and plaza of Staten Island Borough Hall where we will be releasing a special new report on tax fairness and spending on health care and other social programs across the US and in New York, prepared by Americans for Tax Fairness. We'll then march down Bay Street to Tompkinsville Park, located across the street from Staten Island's office where people sign-up for Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, and other public and safety net programs. We'll hold a community speak-out there about what these vital social programs mean for us, our families, and our communities, and how people can take action to protect them. Afterwards, we'll walk back up to the St. George ferry terminal to leaflet commuters about this important matter.
