The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission will vote to approve their unnecessary toxic gas plant at their May Board Meeting THIS THURSDAY, May 15th at 12:00 PM on Zoom.

That’s why we need A MASSIVE SHOWING at Thursday’s Board meeting to demand that PVSC commissioners VOTE NO and cancel their gas plan proposal.

We need allies across NJ to stand with the North community against this wholly unnecessary gas plant. PVSC claims they need this gas plant to prevent a facility blackout and overflow if a major storm hits, as happened during Hurricane Sandy. In the past decade since the storm, billions of dollars of energy grid improvements have been made, substations have been raised above flood levels, and PVSC’s wastewater treatment facility has been encased within a massive floodwall. Since these improvements have been made, the facility has not lost power once. Yet PVSC still wants to build what would be the fourth gas power plant in Newark. Residents face significant health disparities from a long history of environmental racism, resulting in some of the worst air quality in the entire country. The Ironbound is a 4-square-mile community where 50,000 people reside and is home to three gas-burning power plants, our state’s largest trash incinerator, and constant diesel truck traffic through the community to the port and warehouses. Chemicals emitted from toxic industry combined have caused 1 in 4 Newark children to be diagnosed with asthma.
