Stop the Money Pipeline

Start: Monday, June 13, 2022 9:00 AM

Reid Joyce

We don’t live in a fair world.

Our government is for sale to the highest bidder. Most of us don’t have enough money to buy politicians and we shouldn’t have to!

In Pennsylvania, it is completely legal for paid lobbyists to bribe our state elected officials with “gifts”. They are the insults added to the injury done by the many millions of dollars in campaign contributions that pour in from corporate special interests, like the oil & gas and petrochemicals industries. Is it any wonder legislators are more responsive to lobbyists than constituents? These legal bribes grease the wheels that have devastated our Commonwealth and turned communities all across Pennsylvania into sacrifice zones.

This must end! We must end corruption, build a government that is not for sale, and is responsive to the people.

That’s why we are planning an action on Monday, June 13. We are planning to shut down the money pipeline.

Call To Action

It’s not enough to say that our government does not work for us, that it’s bought by lobbyists and monied interests. It’s not enough to rally, march, or lobby calling for an end to corruption. The politicians and lobbyists can weather those squalls. What our history teaches us is that nonviolent civil resistance can bring about change if that civil resistance is part of a sustained and escalating campaign.

Our friends from March On Harrisburg (mohpa.org) have already laid the foundation for our proposed action. For years, they have been disrupting business as usual with our legislators and they are being heard. March On Harrisburg’s call for an end to the bribery (giftban.org) has had an impact – but we can show legislators that this is a multi front battle. We in front line communities can blend our voices with other fights.

We don’t have the money to fight corruption, but we have people power. We can counter their financial might with our bodies, our moral witness, and our calls for our government to live up to its ideals.

If you want to be part of a creative, nonviolent, impactful direct action, please join us in Harrisburg on June 13. There will be roles for people all along the spectrum – from those willing to be arrested to those who are moral witnesses.

We will be providing several training opportunities over the weekend as part of Better Path Coalition’s PA Climate Convergence (https://breatheproject.org/event/pa-climate-convergence/). There will be trainings on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning. This would be a great opportunity to learn some new skills and will provide you with the tools you need to participate in Monday's action.

For Our Future, We Must Act

For more than 11 years, 60 families from a small community called The Woodlands in Butler County visit a water bank at the White Oak Springs Presbyterian Church to receive less than the weekly allowance of clean water the Red Cross recommends for one person. Stories of injustice like theirs are repeated across Pennsylvania, from Dimock to Beaver, from Philly, Chester, and Marcus Hook to Huntingdon, from Clairton to Erie, from Scranton to Washington.

We can’t tolerate the intolerable. Join us.
