New York continues to have the worst income inequality and some of the highest child poverty rates in the nation. In 2021 New York State set a goal to cut child poverty in half, and the state's Child Poverty Reduction Advisory Council issued their recommendations in December, laying out a path to reaching this goal.
Last month we delivered a petition to Gov. Hochul signed by over 35 organizations and 1250 individuals calling on the governor to include the full recommendations in her budget proposal, and to pay for them through modest tax increases on the wealthiest corporations and individuals.
On Jan. 14, Gov. Hochul gave her State of the State address, and while there were some positive steps, her proposals for this year's budget fall far short of what CPRAC recommended and what New Yorkers need and deserve.
But the fight is not over! The Governor's State of the State and Executive Budget are just the first step in the budget process. There is much more we can do before the final budget is passed to push the governor and legislature to follow through on New York's commitment to cut child poverty.
Join us for a virtual briefing on Thursday, Feb. 6 at noon to learn more about Gov. Hochul's Executive Budget and next steps in the campaign to tax the rich and end child poverty in New York.
