Over the past few decades, wealth has flowed to a tiny number of people at the very top while income for most people has barely kept up with the cost of living. The result is a system where wealth concentrates at the top while everyone else falls behind. When returns on wealth are higher than economic growth, inequality grows automatically.

Around the world, more and more people are recognising that taxing work while leaving extreme wealth largely untouched is deeply unfair.

Extreme wealth is not just an economic problem — it is also one of the biggest barriers to serious climate action. Our major political parties are deeply influenced by the fossil fuel lobby, and powerful interests continue to delay the transition we urgently need. Meanwhile, right-wing populist parties such as One Nation are gaining ground, backed by wealthy donors including mining billionaire Gina Rinehart.

Many Australians can see that rising inequality is tearing at the fabric of our society, but politicians have been reluctant to act.

If democracy is to work, ordinary people must have a far stronger voice in the big decisions that shape our future. One way forward would be a Citizens’ Assembly on intergenerational equity, bringing together a representative group of Australians to deliberate on how wealth, opportunity and responsibility should be shared across society.
