SF Planning is holding a public engagement meeting on Tuesday 6-7:30PM at the Eureka Valley Rec Center at 19th & Collingwood, regarding possible Historic District designation of the 400 and 500 blocks of Castro Street and surrounding streets. There will also be a virtual-only meeting on the 9th.

While there are some historically and culturally significant buildings in this area, a blanket Historic District is not what the neighborhood needs to be inclusive and welcoming to future generations of LGBTQ+ neighbors - many of whom already can’t afford to live in the area. The Castro district is at a great hub of transit, parks, and services, and was highlighted as an area for high density under the Family Zoning Plan (160' near the Muni station, 85' along the 400 block of Castro St, 50' along the 500 block of Castro St). Tell SF Planning that we need a small number of carefully considered Contributing Properties with high historic significance and architectural integrity, not a blanket district which will prevent young queer folx from moving to the neighborhood.
