Tell Trader Joe's NO to Plastic!

It's Plastic Free July and 350 Silicon Valley along with Climate Reality Silicon Valley are taking part in a nation-wide plastic demonstration organized by Beyond Plastics and we want you to join us!
About
The plastic crisis is a climate, environment, health and human rights issue. Plastic Free July started in 2011 to raise awareness for individuals to reflect on the plastic they consume.
In the past 10 years the narrative has changed. The responsibility of the plastic crisis is not on consumers but the brands and stores that have proliferated plastics in our lives and made it near impossible to shop without it.
We demand change!
Trader Joe's is a grocery chain that owns the entire vertical of product to packaging and is a prime example of how hard it is to shop without plastics. It doesn't have to be this way!
- We can bring our own bags to buy fruits and vegetables without plastic clamshells, bags and wrappers.
- We can bring our own bags to buy beans, rice, flour and more in bulk without plastic and paper packaging.
- We can bring our own bottles to buy milk and juice without plastic bottles.
Join us in telling Trader Joe's we want food, not plastic!
Details (Updated location!)
Update: 07/18
Due to space and property concerns, we are updating the location to Centennial Plaza, next to the Mountain View CalTrain station.
Although it is not in front of Trader Joe's, we will move forward on addressing Trader Joe's as a supermarket with excessive single-use packaging and sending them a letter asking for plastic-free groceries.
We have sent updated instructions to those who have RSVP'ed and are excited to see you guys out there with your plastic and plastic-free living signs!
This event is about showcasing all the single-use plastic we receive from grocery shopping. We'll save up all our discarded plastic packaging from Trader Joe's (or other grocery chains) and bring it to Centennial Plaza in downtown Mountain View on July 23. We will invite local news outlets to cover our demonstration and sign and mail a letter to the CEO demanding plastic-free shopping options.
Timeline - Please RSVP for up-to-date information!
- Today: Start collecting your plastic packaging (ideally from Trader Joe's but any packaging from groceries is good!)
- July 23, 10:30am: Meet at the Centennial Plaza, organize our plastic and get situated.
- July 23, 11:00 - 11:15am: Hold our demonstration in front of any press, photos.
Note: This is a peaceful and respectful demonstration. We will collect all plastic packaging after the event and responsibly dispose.
