Upstate tenants deserve strong protections against unfair rent hikes, but the NYC Real Estate Lobby is blocking them. Join us on April 9th for a meeting hosted by Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha's office to learn about what tenants can do to fight back!
In 2019, the statewide tenant movement won the right for upstate municipalities to adopt the same strong rent stabilization laws downstate tenants have had for over half a century. But for the past 7 years, landlords—funded by big real estate—have sued and harassed city after city, using the courts and technicalities in the law to overturn rent stabilization and jack up rents on upstate tenants. To this day, Kingston is the only upstate city that has managed to keep rent stabilization in place, and now Kingston is being sued yet again!
That's why we're fighting to pass the REST Act THIS YEAR in Albany. The REST Act will simplify the process of adopting rent stabilization, ensuring we can keep it in Kingston, and finally allowing many other towns and cities across the state to opt in without fear of legal harassment. It will also give cities the right to cover many more tenants than the law currently allows.
TENANTS DESERVE REST! Come learn about the fight to pass it this year and how you can help.
