Join the Building Community Not Prisons Coalition Wednesday March 20th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm EST for a teach-in exploring the environmental impacts of the most expensive proposed Federal prison in US history in Letcher County, Kentucky. Together we will learn from environmental activists, currently incarcerated environmental justice organizers, and community members in Letcher County about the harms this prison poses to the local environment, the surrounding community, and prisoners.

When the federal government first tried to build this prison in 2015, organizers, now part of the Building Community Not Prisons coalition, successfully mobilized environmental experts, community members in Letcher County, and Federal prisoners against the prison. Together, they dragged the original EIS process out for four years, culminating in first-of-its-kind litigation where prisoners and local Letcher County residents sued the BOP under the National Environmental Protection Act. In an unprecedented victory for the health of prisoners, the surrounding community, and the local environment, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) canceled the project in 2019.
