The Committee for the Republic is honored to host Cato’s renowned author Gene Healy. Gene will elaborate on his prescient and widely-acclaimed book The Cult of the Presidency: America’s Dangerous Devotion to Executive Power.

Empires need a Caesar. Unity of command is their hallmark.

Gene deftly portrays the rising reverence and ornamentation that has crowned the Office of the President in lockstep with our insatiable imperial ambitions since World War II. Mr. Trump’s assertions of presidential power continue the disassembling of our Constitution’s checks and balances.

Donald Trump didn’t invent the Imperial Presidency: he inherited it. As Gene warned, the Republican and Democratic parties disregard for separation of powers created “the most powerful office in the world”. “We the People” voted for a constitutional monstrosity by looking for salvation in our Presidents: “The Imperial Presidency is the price of making the office the focus of our national hopes and dreams.”

Can “We the People” undo the executive despotism we created and make Congress Great Again?
