Earlier, in 2022, survivors won their lawsuit against the South Korean government for its role in the system, but the fight for justice and reparations is not complete until the U.S. military is also held accountable. As anti-imperialists, we are committed to supporting this crucial and historic lawsuit — not only for Korean survivors, but for all survivors of the sexual violence and exploitation that imperialism brings around the world.

While the issue of “comfort women” — the euphemism used to refer to women and girls sexually enslaved by the Japanese Empire during the colonial period — is widely known, the vast “kijichon system” established by the American occupation and South Korean government after WWII has intentionally been kept out of public discourse in much the same way. For decades, young women and girls were economically coerced — and in some cases kidnapped and trafficked — into “servicing” American soldiers stationed in South Korea.

Join Nodutdol Bay Area to learn about the historic lawsuit brought by South Korean camptown women against the U.S. military, the ongoing struggle for justice and reparations, and the broader legacy of militarism, empire, and gendered violence in Korea. The event will include political education, discussion, and connections between these struggles to ongoing organizing efforts today.
