Thank you for your interest in attending one of our exclusive screenings of 'They Walked Off'. We're very excited to see you at the event. Here's some background information on the documentary itself.
This past summer, 13 people walked off of their Birthright trips. They did so because it became clear that Birthright was not going to tell them the full story about the Occupation. To learn the truth, they had to walk off and see it for themselves.
Their actions went viral. Pretty soon nearly everyone in the American Jewish community was talking about ‘The Walk-Offs’. They received widespread coverage in Huffington Post, NowThis, Newsweek and many more. In all of these pieces people started to ask the same question, why does Birthright hide the Occupation from its participants?
Almost overnight, the entire conversation around Birthright completely changed. Whereas many thought of Birthright as just a fun, free trip for young American Jews, people started to realize that Birthright is #NotJustAFreeTrip; People stopped asking ‘when’ you would go on Birthright, and instead started asking ‘if’ you would do so.
Now, a few months later, a documentary has been made about this monumental shift in the American Jewish community. The documentary, titled ‘They Walked Off’, explores how Birthright and the Jewish community at large uphold the Occupation by hiding it from their youth, and how a new generation of Jews is fighting against that trent. In the documentary, you’ll hear from experts as well as those who walked off their Birthright trips on why the American Jewish community needs to transform its support of the Occupation into a call for freedom and dignity for all.
In the next few weeks, we are coming together to watch the Birthright Walk-off documentary and discuss what it means to be Jewish in this age, as we questions the communal institutions that many of us participate in.
