Turbo-Charged Consumer Capitalism:

and what to do about it

Sunday 2nd November 2025

2pm - 6pm
@ The Advocacy Academy, 2 Beehive Place, SW9 7QR, London

“Agile, immortal, brilliant, efficient, superhumanly strong and intelligent, undeniably seductive. Yet also heartless, deeply amoral, selfish, exploitive, cold. All that is on display at Amazon, where the cult of consumer obsession provides all the moral justification that’s needed – for anything. In the world of Amazon, the end always justifies the means.” — Robin Gaster, author of ‘Behemoth: Amazon Rising’

With Black Friday 2025 approaching, billboards and digital advertising messages will go into overdrive once more; promoting must-have deals and the virtues of hyperconsumerism. Amazon’s profits and ever-growing reach into new sectors of our economy is built upon the squeezed pay and conditions of workers, with a resource-hungry model that is driving up greenhouse gas emissions and a world-beating ability to minimise tax payments across the globe. CEO Jeff Bezos has now amassed a personal wealth of $200 billion.

Join our panel discussion to learn how workers, environmentalists and tax justice campaigners are organising as part of the Make Amazon Pay coalition. Find out how you can get involved in creative actions to stem the bombardment of consumer advertising this November.

The event will consist of a panel discussion (2pm - 3.30pm) followed by creative arts skillshare.

Speakers include:

  • James Schneider (Make Amazon Pay coalition)
  • Rachael Henry (IPPR)
  • Andrew Simms (New Weather Institute and Scientists for Global Responsibilty)
