Why UBI?: What is Universal Basic Income, and do we need it? A workshop for beginners.

How would you spend a regular no strings attached lump sum from the government?

As the pandemic goes on, and more and more people are pushed into economic hardship, many people are calling for the government to address this in part by giving every citizen a regular, unconditional payment, or what's called a 'Universal Basic Income'. The idea might sound like something from a distant utopian future, but UBI was proposed as early as 1516 by Thomas More and has been tried in many places across the world, from Kenya to Canada, and most recently in Finland.

But how does UBI work in practice, and could it be a viable way to improve our economy and our lives here in the UK? How would we pay for it? After our successful Introduction to the Economy workshop in November, we're partnering with Economy again to explore these questions and more in this introductory session on UBI. If you're new to UBI and want to understand it better and be more confident having conversations about it, register for this interactive, discussion based workshop now.
