Oil companies are using the war in Iran as a pretext to raise gasoline prices and gouge consumers. The conflict has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway where more than 20% of the world's crude oil passes every day. Big Oil is making billions by keeping prices high, just like they did at the start of the war in Ukraine, and using those windfall profits to reward wealthy shareholders and enrich executives while everyday Americans see their costs rise.

A windfall profits tax would tax excessive profits to stop Big Oil's profiteering, give back money to working families to cover healthcare, housing, and basic necessities, and usher in a new era of accountability on corporate greed.
