The most crucial day of the whole campaign! On polling day we need to remind our voters to go out and vote for us. We'll start the day by putting a reminder leaflet through the doors of our supporters before making sure we sit outside polling stations while voting is open (7AM-10PM) and knocking on the doors of our supporters until we are sure they have all voted.
Can you take the day off to help us? Or spend some hours before or after work, or over lunch? Recent elections have been won or lost by a handful of votes, so whatever time you can spare will make a real difference!
More information about the different activities on polling day - please sign up for any or all:
Early Morning Leafleting: We'll start at 5.30AM to make sure we reach people before they go out to work. You'll get a map and list of addresses and can go out in a pair if you prefer. Make sure you're quiet - we don't want to wake people up! We aim to finish by 7.30AM, at which time we'll go for breakfast or a coffee together.
Telling at Polling Stations: Telling is sitting outside (or inside if permitted) polling stations with a friendly smile and a Green rosette. We're not allowed to campaign or try to persuade people to vote Green, but just having a friendly presence and being helpful if needed (by e.g. looking after dogs or opening doors to voters) is very effective. There are three polling stations for Wivenhoe:
Silberrad Student Centre University of Essex |
| Broomgrove School |
| William Loveless Hall |
They open at 7AM and close at 10PM and our aim is to have presence at all of them throughout the day. Further information will be given if you sign up for a slot. Slots are usually 2 hours, but can be shorter or longer.
Door-Knocking: This is the best day of door-knocking! We only knock on the people we know support us, so everyone is friendly. You'll have a script and can go with someone else. The aim is to make sure our supporters have actually remembered to vote. We'll start at 10AM and keep going until we've ticked everyone off our list. Sign up for any time you have available.
Attending the Count in Colchester: It's important to have a presence when votes are counted. This usually happens at Leisure World in Colchester, and we'll be there from around 11PM until the results are declared (possibly around 2-3AM). At the count, we monitor the counting to make sure votes are correctly counted, and do our own tally so that we know where in Wivenhoe we are stronger and weaker.
