Every few years, utility companies around New York State submit requests for rate changes to the Public Service Commission in what is known as a "Rate Case." This past June, RG&E and NYSEG, the two utility companies that cover a majority of the nine-county region surrounding Rochester, submitted their filings.
Over the next nine months, the utility companies, New York State, and a number of other stakeholders will engage in the Rate Case process to determine how much our utility rates will increase and what the utility companies can spend that increased revenue on.
The Rate Case is a big opportunity for advocates concerned with climate, economic, and racial justice to make their voices heard, and we will have a chance to do that here in Rochester. This Fall the PSC will be holding Public Statement hearings around the state and online, and we need to prepare ourselves to submit impactful, effective public statements calling for affordable rates, stronger climate investments, and more.
The first public statement hearings in Rochester will be on September 30th at 1pm and at 6pm at City Hall!
Join the Climate Solutions Accelerator and our partners for a workshop to learn how to draft and submit effective public comments in the 2025 rate case!
