Join us for a conversation exploring the historical roots of Zionism and its relationship to European colonial and political thought.

This panel, happening during uOttawa's Israeli Apartheid Week, will discuss the arguments raised in Dr. Sonia Dayan-Herzbrun's Le sionisme, une invention européenne: Genèse d'une idéologie (Zionism, a European Invention: Genesis of an Ideology) and the broader historical debates around Zionism’s emergence in nineteenth-century Europe. The discussion will examine the political, intellectual, and colonial contexts in which Zionism developed, and how these histories continue to shape debates about identity, nationalism, and Palestine today.

Panelists will include:

  • Sonia Dayan-Herzbrun, Professor Emerita of Political Sociology, University of Paris Cité: Sonia Dayan-Herzbrun is Professor Emerita of Political Sociology, a member of Laboratory for Social and Political Change (LCSP, Université Paris Cité), and co-editor for the journal Tumultes. Her work critically engages with questions of coloniality.
  • Monia Mazigh, Adjunct Professor, Department of English and Literature, Carleton University: Monia Mazigh is an author and adjunct and research Professor at Carleton University at the Department of English and Literature. She is known for campaigning for her husband’s release, Maher Arar, who had been deported to Syria, where he was tortured and held without charge for over a year. After fighting to clear his name and seeking reparations, she ran in 2004 as a federal candidate for the NDP.

This event is hosted in collaboration with Faculty for Palestine Ottawa, INSAF uOttawa, Independent Jewish Voices Carleton, and Students for Justice in Palestine Carleton.
