1 Million For Voting Rights
In 2020, Black voters delivered unprecedented turnout and risked everything – including their own health at the height of the pandemic – to vote Joe Biden and Senate Democrats into office, in part on a promise to protect civil rights. But after nearly two years of Capitol Hill protests, White House demonstrations, letters, petitions, and civil disobedience from voting rights activists demanding action, Senate Republicans and 2 Senate Democrats – Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema – have blocked the passage of voting rights legislation, particularly the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
We cannot lose sight of what’s at stake. Our movement has made incredible progress over the years. But dangerous Supreme Court decisions, a wave of state-level voter restrictions, and Senate inaction threaten to turn back the clock on election freedom and our ability to build power and make gains on the issues impacting our communities. More than half a century after the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we’re still mobilizing our communities against the same disenfranchisement, voter suppression tactics, and Senate filibuster that Dr. King, Congressman John Lewis, and a generation of freedom fighters took on in the sixties. We should not still be fighting this fight – but we will if we have to.
On what would have been Congressman John Lewis’ 82nd birthday, we’re announcing a movement of one million strong of families and friends, neighbors and activists committed to using our collective power to fight for voting rights. We will take the fight to the streets as well as to the voting booths as we uplift voting rights champions and remove vote suppressors. We know that the right to vote is at the core of any functioning democracy.
