2018 Sunrise Semester Internship Program

The 2018 Sunrise Semester Internship Program is designed for young people to spend up to 40 hrs/week volunteering to support progressive local candidates and to make climate change a more significant political issue.

Interns will participate in extensive leadership development, political strategy, and social justice trainings. From phone banking and canvassing, to designing and executing creative public actions, interns will complete the program as powerful youth leaders with the skills, motivation, and political savvy to get the job done.

Interns will learn alongside Sunrise Semester Fellows. Our electoral work will start in mid-June and we'll be engaged through the election in November.

The Internship Program is limited geographically to specific areas where Sunrise Semester Fellows will be organizing on the ground. That means that the Sunrise Semester Internship is only open to young people living in:

- Michigan: Lansing or Kalamazoo

- Florida: Orlando

- New York: New York City or NYC suburbs with the ability to commute to Brooklyn or the Bronx

- Pennsylvania: Greater Philadelphia, Lancaster, Lehigh Valley, Chester County

- Minnesota: Twin Cities

If you don't live in one of these places, but are interested in interning, please email team@sunrisemovement.org to inquire about available digital internships.

FAQ:

Is this a paid internship?

Nope. This a volunteer experience that will give you the opportunity to learn and practice valuable professional skills all while fighting for the health and wellbeing of your community. However, we can help you cover transportation and food expenses. Email semester@sunrisemovement.org to discuss scholarship opportunities.

I don’t live in the States and/or cities where the internship program is active. Can I still be a Sunrise Intern?

The Sunrise Semester Internship Program is designed for young people 18 or under living in places where Sunrise Semester is actively engaged (listed above). If you live elsewhere, email team@sunrisemovement.org. We have digital internship opportunities available.

How much time am I required to commit?

This is up to you! We ask interns to dedicate 10+ hrs/week in order to have ample time to acquire knowledge and practice skills. Once you apply for the internship, we'll be in touch to discuss your time commitment.

What exactly will I be doing as a Sunrise Intern?

You won’t be fetching coffee! Day to day tasks as a Sunrise Intern will range from phone banking to volunteering at local events to brainstorming public actions with Sunrise Semester Fellows. As an intern, you’ll be part of a group of young people actively engaged in political field work and you’ll experience first-hand how grassroots campaigns are run.

What if I can’t be there for the entire summer?

That’s ok! We don’t mind if you need to go out of town for awhile. We’re just looking for committed individuals who will be involved when they are in town.
