A Letter From Activision Blizzard QA Employees
QA employees are an integral piece of ABK, and have a right to be treated with the dignity and respect we deserve. From the recent mass rollout of PIPs with mandatory bug quotas, and a lack of transparent communication between management and employees, there is a clear systemic problem that demands immediate change informed directly by the needs and input of QA employees. These changes are in an effort to improve our work environment as well as communication, and, in turn, improve performance and productivity through the lens of quality assurance, not quantity assurance. The issue is not writing bugs, but requiring a set number of bugs to be written under the threat of disciplinary action which negatively impacts employee mental health and well being. We can make a better ABK that is inclusive of all voices who contribute to this company’s work through currently lacking good faith bargaining.
Therefore we demand the following:
-
A clear appeals process with the right to a coworker witness of the employee’s choosing as well as a chance for the employee to present evidence that they have met job expectations
-
Mandatory manager training on the concept of progressive discipline and a progressive discipline policy that includes at least two steps before termination
-
A commitment from the company that PIPs will be used to facilitate employee growth, and not result in termination without prior warning and opportunity for continued improvement before any disciplinary action is taken
-
An end to the irregular practice of requiring QA employees to meet bug quotas, and a meeting with QA employees at respective studios to set standardized metrics that more properly gauge employee productivity in alignment with standard industry practices
-
More clear and transparent communication from all levels of the company to QA employees, including but not limited to live Q&A sessions
Progressive discipline and transparent communication allows for accountability both from management and employees while improving the quality of our games. Workers who are treated with dignity and respect are workers who are happy and productive, in turn making a better ABK for all of us.
