Between 2019 and 2021, 97 members of Congress or their family members invested in weapons contractor stocks, and 25 of them sat on committees directly responsible for shaping national security policy while they traded and profited off those stocks. This is unacceptable.
Members of Congress were elected to serve the public, not to serve their stock portfolios. Their constituents sent them to Congress to invest in life and in everyday working people, not in death and endless war.
But each year, the majority of Congresspeople pass record-breaking military budgets, sending nearly $1 trillion each year to the U.S. Department of Defense (housed in the Pentagon) -- which has failed to pass an audit for six years in a row, and which allocates around half its annual budget directly to military contractors.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib introduced the Stop Politicians Profiting from War Act to prohibit members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children from having any financial interests in corporations that do business with the U.S. Department of Defense --including banning members from trading defense stocks.
